In all stories I have heard before, you're supposed to go up and never look back.
[Because, you know, the underworld and what not. Akihiko stares at any obstacles like he's evaluating how good it'd be to climb them and deciding it'd be too risky. He doesn't want to just go and break a leg today, thanks]
Mm. In only special circumstances - in folktale and legends, as they stand - the hero of the story is able to return from the land of the dead. But we shall see what roles we play in this particular story.
[ especially considering what he knows he must get back to. he's sure there are many others who could say the same. ]
[Takes a while, but soon it's clear walking forward won't do, because it's inevitable they'll find themselves back to where they started. Maybe they'll see the cafe again, or maybe they'll encounter one of the other new angels]
...but we were walking a straight line! What was it, a huge circle all along?
[Right? It sure felt like that, except for a few deviations that shouldn't have gotten them off track...!]
[ to have the dense fog give way, zhongli thought for a moment that they might have found something - but when it turns out to be their starting point, his hand comes to his chin and he regards the now-familiar place they've found themselves in. ]
We corrected our course, when encountering something that could not simply be passed over. I know this for certain.
There are a number of situations that could lead to such a phenomena. This world, wherever it may be, could be small enough to facilitate such a trek becoming a "huge circle," or there are powers in play that would prevent us from leaving this designated area. Whether it be a person, or the powers of the location itself... I wouldn't be able to say.

This is going to be a drag of an eternity, if all we have is a tiny transparent place with one fast food place.

It's more akin to an in-between, a sort of waiting room, than a true afterlife. Ideally that truly applies.
