Think for a moment. What's the last thing you remember, exactly? Were you with your loved ones? Were you fighting for your life? Whatever the case may be, the story ends like this: you died. Regardless of how important circumstances were, you have been eliminated from your own world. That's all there is.

Perhaps it will surprise you to wake up surrounded by the sky in every direction. What's above is reflected below in the shallow water that ripples beneath you without getting you wet. Strangely, what lies beneath this water is a mystery to you, and it feels more like walking on a glass surface, completely solid and clear underfoot.

Despite the fact you've perished, nothing hurts. Any injuries you arrived with have been neatly bandaged, and anything life-threatening has been mended enough that it no longer is. The warm sunshine probably feels good on your skin right now, doesn't it? The temperature is perfect, and you feel oddly comfortable considering the circumstances.

You aren't the only one rousing, however. Strangers around you also blink into consciousness, glowing halos flickering to life and floating over their heads. It might be hard to see the shape of your own halo looking up, but your reflection on the ground should help with that. Reaching up to touch it will prove futile. It's intangible, though your hand feels a little warm passing through it.

Your first instinct might be to leave. Can't blame you. You're in a strange place surrounded by strange people and no sense of direction. You might even try to use one of your powers from your home world to escape, but try as you might they don't appear to work. Worry not though; it looks like this place has bestowed some gifts upon you. Within your vicinity you have have one item from home. You have a gift box with your name on it. And, of course, you have the brand new sexy angel costume that you're already wearing! 😇

So what are you waiting for? Up and at 'em! The island has plenty of space to explore, though as you approach the edge it fades slowly into a thick fog. Pressing onward into the fog will disorient you and soon you'll find yourself completely turned around right back where you started. Probably best to stick to this area.

But hey, there's plenty to look at still! Instead of empty space, scattered around the island you'll see glassy, transparent protrusions from the ground. Most of them... well, you can't quite make out the shape. Could be buildings. Could be trees. Could be objects on the ground. Flowers, maybe? Their form doesn't seem to want to settle, and the light catching on their edges isn't really as illuminating as you'd like.

There is one exception to this. One shape seems to be more stable than the rest, less transparent and instead just... hazy. It's like you're looking at it through glasses with the wrong prescription. Even though it's blurry, you can tell that it's a cafe, and its door is wide open. Thoughtful, right? Whoever or whatever brought you here, at least they don't want you to starve!

Though no one is manning the counter, you can order your desired meal off of the slightly-clearer touch screen menu that offers up any kind of fast food you could want. There are also two restrooms in the back, with the keys hanging up on the wall beside them. That aside, there doesn't appear to be anything else open and you're left to your own devices.

We understand this is a lot to process, so take your time adjusting. And remember: everything is fine.

As mentioned, each of you wake up with your item from home and a gift box with your name on it. There's a printed note attached to the fancy ribbon tying it off. It reads: Enjoy a welcome gift from us! For any questions, please refer to the informational pamphlet inside. ... but naturally, no such pamphlet seems to exist.

Are pamphlets really that helpful? [ ... ] You sound like you're used to things like this.

But what can we do? Play around with [ gestures ] disembodied arms, fish, and weirdly colored eggs until something changes?

I wouldn't say I'm used to things like this specifically... but I am used to getting work done with limited leads.

[ and despite being an airhead at times, he tries to be serious when it counts. he counts off next steps on his fingers ]

[ one ] We can wait for more information to come, whether it's in a pamphlet or not. [ two ] We can stay rested and well-fed before we tackle the next set of problems. [ three ] And we can see what we have common in people with here to find some answers, and also build allyships and trusted networks.

At least... that's my plan!

There's nowhere to rest, but at least there's the cafe if we get hungry...

What do you think we'd need "networks" for? There aren't that many of us here. Can't we just talk like normal or have an assembly or something if we have stuff to share?

You can sleep in shifts anywhere if you're worried about being ambushed or having your things taken. It might not be ideal, but it's better than not sleeping.

[ and he smiles a little bit at that mention ]

That'd be nice! I hope that we can trust each other enough for that. But it's still early, so it makes sense if people are less eager to rely on strangers, even if we have common goals.

In shifts? [ like it's an alien concept. ] What are you worried about ambushing us? There's nowhere for anything to come from, except maybe the cafe.

[ huffs. ]

That's dumb. No one can do everything by themselves.

Some people in a foreign situation will try to take anything they can get that might be an advantage—like a bathroom key.

[ just as an example ]

But I like the way you think! I hope it all plays out like you say.

[ he's just seen some truly horrible people in the world so he'd rather be prepared than not ]

That doesn't even make any sense. It's just a bathroom.

[ what! is wrong! with you people! ]

I mean... That's how things are in the Tower. [ mostly. ] If everyone just did whatever they wanted, nothing would work. Even if it's true that we're [ his voice breaks a little here ] dead, isn't that the same everywhere?

[ to be able to share information freely and trust that people will act in each other's best interests... ]

Where I'm from, even if there's laws, there's plenty of people who break them because they're desperate or they've been driven to it by difficult circumstances. Or the laws themselves are twisted.

I've heard it's like that outside of the Tower. But that's why we live there. It's safer for us and better than dealing with people who won't follow the rules.

Sounds like you could use a place like the Tower.

Well... who gets to decide who's in the Tower? Is everyone welcome?

As far as I know, yeah. But especially demiflora, as long as they follow the rules.

B-But I don't use my powers in the Tower! None of us do [ shoots the arm a quick glare ] except for Iris, but he's long gone.

Oh! That's amazing, I don't have any powers.

[ glances over at the arm... ] What happened to Iris? Is he okay?

So you're just a normal human. There are normal people int he Tower, too.

[ laurence looks away, expression falling. ]

That's... complicated.

[ yeah he's just a guy! but he looks thoughtful, apologetic at the way that lauren reacts to his second question ]

... sorry. I hope he's safe.

[ nods solemnly, but then he just huffs again! god! ]

If he's not, it's his own fault. That guy's always finding ways to cause trouble for us, even after he left the Tower.

[noirges]

Oh yeah? How's that possible? I thought the Tower kept you safe from everything that's going on outside it.

[outdistanced]

Usually it does. But some guy broke in recently, and when he left, he took Iris with him. It looked like he even wanted to go, and good riddance if he did, but... the guy was a criminal. He probably forced Iris to help.

[noirges]

Oh!

Do you know why he broke in? Was there something in the Tower that he wanted?

[ yves is really trying to get the entire plot of countdown to countdown here ]

[ unfortunately for yves this is a side character who knows basically nothing ]

My only guess is maybe he wanted something from the room with the eyes, but I don't know. No one said why he was there, just that he killed some of the guards.

...It was. But I'm fine. I... [ wait he shouldn't say anything suspicious uhhhhh ] I never even saw him.

A-Anyway... They're long gone now. The staff's still looking into it, I think, but that's the first time anyone's ever broken in from the outside. It's always been safe before that.
